Personality Bio
I was born and rasied in the great state of Michigan under the shadow of Bo Schembechler (hence my love for of college football). I also am a huge fan of college hockey and the NHL. If you ever want to talk either, don't hesitate to email me: scottfitzgerald@clearchannel.com
Some people ask me "If you're a Michigan fan, how come your also a USC Fan?" Well when you get beat enough by one team you learn to respect them. Also I lived on the west coast in the 90's and I got to watch a LOT of Pac Ten Football and USC is to college football what butter is to bread. You just can't have one without the other.
Just a bit of background info. As I said, I was born and raised in Grand Rapids,. Michigan. After serving 9 years in the United States Navy, I left the Navy for Louisville and haven't looked back since. I am huge Detroit Sports fan as you will hear from time to time on the show. Despite what you hear from many, Detroit is a fantastic sports town!
Don't get me wrong, my wife introduced me to the ways of the wise and when I'm not cheering on the Trojans or Wolverines, it's all Cardinals all the time!
From the last Saturday in August to the first Saturday in January you can hear the Dr. Tom Robbins and I talking all things college football at 9:00 a.m. right here on 790WKRD!

WEEK 10 COLLEGE FOOTBALL TV SKED/PREDICTIONS/BROADCAST CREWS
Thursday 11-05-2009 10:00am ET
***RANKINGS REFLECT BCS RANKINGS***
THURSDAY #23 VIRGINIA TECH AT EAST CAROLINA - 7:30p - ESPN - CHRIS FOWLER/JESSIE PALMER/ERIN ANDREWS Losers of two in a row, the Virginia Tech Hokies face a team from the Carolina's for a 2nd week in a row. After starting the season 1-2, the Pirates have won 4 of the last 5 but their biggest win is against 5-3 Marshall. VIRGINIA TECH - 32
E. CAROLINA - 21
FRIDAY #7 BOISE STATE AT LA TECH - 8p - ESPN - JOE TESSITORE/ROD GILMORE Two weeks ago, Boise State was #4 in the BCS, but as predicted because of their schedule they continue to slip and appear to be stuck on #7 for the second week in a row. La Tech is a woeful 3-5, further adding to the criticism. BOISE ST - 35
LA TECH - 14 SATURDAY CENTRAL FLORDIA AT #2 TEXAS - 12p - ESPN - DAVE LAMONT/J.C. PEARSON The last time these two met in Orlando it was a close 35-32 win for the horns. They went on to lose 2 out of their next 3. Don't expect history to repeat itself. There are rumors swirling in Orlando that Tommy Tubberville is interested in the UCF job, despite the Knights posting a 4-3 record this year. UCF - 6 TEXAS - 42 ILLINOIS AT MINNESOTA - 12p - BIG TEN NETWORK - MATT ROSEN/RON JOHNSON Slow clap to the Big 11 Network for giving us this one. Illinois gets over on a Michigan team who apparently thinks the season ends in October and Minnesota gets over Sparty. As a result of the win, the Gophers improved from the 112th best offense in the nation to the 101st. WOOT! ILLINOIS - 22 MINNESOTA - 29
LOUISVILLE AT WEST VIRGINIA - 12p - BIG EAST NETWORK -MIKE GLEASON/JOHN CONGEMI/QUINT KESSENICH Hard to believe just how meaningless this rivalry has become in such a short time. West Virginia is 6-2 but in those two loses the Mountianeers allowed a combined 71 points while losing by 22. Louisville 3rd string QB Will Stein had a good outing last week, but it was Arkansas State who did post the nation's 86th best pass defense coming into this game. LOUISVILLE - 14 WEST VIRGINIA - 33 NORTHWESTERN AT #4 IOWA - 12p - ESPN - DAVE PASCH/CHRIS SPIELMAN/BOB GRIESE There's a reason this is on the BIG evil four letter, yes the Hawkeyes are the 4th best team in the nation, but Classy Kirk is just 1-3 V. Northwestern in it's last 4. Just getting by and Ohio State on the schedule next week, the network is hoping for the upset here. Last week V. #11 Penn State the Northwestern D held PSU to just 3 of 10 on 3rd down and were tied through three quarters.. NORTHWESTERN - 24 IOWA - 41
PURDUE AT MICHIGAN - 12p - BIG TEN NETWORK - WAYNE LARRIVEE/CHRIS MARTIN Michigan has apparently packed it in this season not winning a game (Delaware State doesn't count) since beating Indiana back in September. Purdue is just one score away from being 7-2, to include a heartbreaking 2 point loss @ #8 Oregon. PURDUE - 23 MICHIGAN - 29
SYRACUSE AT #13 PITT - 12p - ESPNU - CLAY MATVICK/DAVID DIAZ-INFANTE When the season started the Big East didn't have a single team ranked in the top 25. Now they have three. One of those is the Pitt Panthers. Only a late blown lead at NC State is keeping them from the ranks of the undefeated. After this week it's Notre Dame, @ West Virginia then closing out the season against Cincinnati. The Panthers lead the nation in sacks and boast the nation's 4th best rusher with Dion Lewis. SYRACUSE - 14 PITT - 34
WESTERN MICHIGAN AT MICHIGAN STATE - 12p - BIG TEN NETWORK- ARI WOLFE/ANTHONY HERRON Western Michigan is a woeful 4-5 and Sparty fan following two straight loses have vacated Spartan Stadium for the Breslin Center. Nothing to see here, shows over, move along folks. W. MICHIGAN - 17 MICHIGAN STATE - 37
#21 WISCONSIN AT INDIANA - 12p - BIG TEN NETWORK - CRAIG COSHUN/GLEN MASON/MIKE HALL The Badgers are 6-2 and ranked in the BCS, but their two loses are against Iowa and Ohio State. Further validation that the Badgers are well, the Badgers. WISCONSIN - 32
INDIANA - 21
SOUTH CAROLINA AT ARKANSAS - 12p - SEC NETWORK- DAVE NEAL/ANDRE WARE/CARA CAPUANO Getting pasted by Tennessee last week is telling about where this South Carolina team is at despite having the nation's 16th best defense. This will be offense vs. defense as Bobby Petrino boasts the nation's 7th best scoring offense. Razorback Quarterback Ryan Mallet is the SEC's 2nd most efficient quarterback behind only Florida's Tim Tebow.. SOUTH CAROLINA - 21 ARKANSAS - 27
KANSAS AT KANSAS ST - 12:30p - VERSUS - RON THULIN/KELLY STOUFER/LEWIS JOHNSON Two teams from the same state going in two different directions Kansas State comes in winning 4 of the last 6 after starting '09 1-2. The Jayhawks who just a month ago were #16 are now out of the top 25 following three straight loses. KANSAS - 22 KANSAS STATE - 24
BROWN AT YALE - 1p - YES The Ivy League still keeping that Saturday afternoon presence. This week it's the 4-2 Brown Bears and their #1 Ivy league offense traveling to the 4-3 Yale Bulldogs. For Yale, they're just two scores away from bring 6-1 and do field the Ivy's 2nd best total defense.. BROWN - 31 YALE - 24
NAVY AT NOTRE DAME - 2:30 p.m. - NBC - TOM HAMMOND/PAT HAYDEN/ALEX FLANNIGAN Navy has really missed QB Ricky Dobbs who re-aggravated a cracked knee cap earlier in the year against SMU. He played briefly in the Mid's loss to Temple last week and his presence is missed when he's not in the game. Slow clap for the Irish who clubbed the baby seal in San Antonio last week. NAVY - 21 NOTRE DAME - 32 ARMY AT AIR FORCE - 3:30 p.m. - CBS COLLEGE SPORTS - DAVE RYAN/JASON SEHORN Air Force after losing to Navy earlier this season is out of the running for the Commander In Chief's Trophy, but not Army, despite the Cadets being just 3-5. Army surprisingly has one of the nations 15th best defenses and can keep hope alive for getting back the CIC trophy with a win in Colorado Springs. ARMY - 10
AIR FORCE - 26
DUKE AT NORTH CAROLINA - 3:30 p.m. - ESPN U - TODD HARRIS/JC PEARSON NO REALLY! The Duke Blue Devils are 5-3 and 3-1 in ACC play and mathmatically still in the ACC Coastal Division race, while North Carolina occupies the Coastal Division cellar. DUKE - 17 NORTH CAROLINA - 27
KENT STATE AT ARKON - 3:30 P.M. - FOX SPORTS (OHIO) //LOCAL FOR LOUISVILLE// JEFF PHELPS/HANFORD DIXON Why? Even the hardcore MAC fan isn't watching this one. KENT STATE - 31 AKRON - 21
#9 LSU AT #3 ALABAMA - 3:30P - CBS - VERNE LUNDQUIST/GARY DANIELSON/TRACEY WOLFSON Jig is up LSU. Yes they have the nation's 15th best defense but 100th total offense won't get it done against Alabama. Hype is just about all this game has going for it. Someone here isn't as good as it's ranking. LSU - 13 ALABAMA - 27 #16 OHIO STATE AT #11 PENN STATE - 3:30p - ABC - SEAN MCDONOUGH/MATT MILLEN/HOLLY ROWE
So whose the REAL big fish in a little pond?? Even after clubbing hapless New Mexico State the Buckeyes still field the nation's 96th best pass attack. The recruit previously known as "hype" Terrelle Pryor still ranks as the nation's 61 most efficient passer in the nation. Penn State fares a shade better on offense. Both have strong defenses. Again, two good teams whose outcome means nothing other than the winner gets a shot at taking Iowa's place in the Rose Bowl should they trip up. OHIO STATE - 20 PENN STATE - 22
OKLAHOMA STATE AT IOWA STATE - 3:30P - ESPN2 Ummmmm...still trying to figure out why this rates evil four letter coverage. I get Iowa State knocked off Nebraska in Lincoln, but they did get pasted last weekend by Texas A&M 35-10. You saw all you needed to see about Oklahoma State last weekend getting beat down 41-10 by Texas. Watch at your own risk. OKLAHOMA STATE - 29 IOWA STATE - 21 #8 OREGON AT STANFORD - 3:30p - FOX SPORTS NET - BARRY THOMPKINS/PETROS PAPADAKIS/REBECCA HARLOWE October 6, 2007 - the date Stanford and first year head coach Jim Harbaugh knocked off (then #2 USC in LA). Jim Harbaugh is no stranger to big games. Oregon, after an emotional win are now the Pac Ten banner carriers. It up to them to respond each week from here on out. For all the hype put on Oregon QB Jeremiah Masoli Oregon is still an average 45th best when it comes to offense. OREGON - 26 STANFORD - 19
WAKE FOREST AT #10 GEORGIA TECH - 3:30P - ABC/ESPN2 - PAM WARD/RAY BENTLEY "Step right up and spin the wheel of ACC...round and round it goes, where it stops no one knows. Who will win, who will lose? Only the wheel can tell"Ok, it's not that easy, but thats what it feels like in the ACC this season. Off all the teams Georgia Tech seems to be the most consistent. Georgia Tech Quarterback Josh Nesbett is the most efficent quarterback in the nation. WAKE FOREST - 22 GEORGIA TECH - 38
#6 TCU AT SAN DIEGO STATE - 4p - VERSUS - TIM NEVERETT/GLENN PARKER/LINDSAY SOTO Yes the Aztecs of San Diego State have won three of their last four but the combined record of those teams....6-20. This week the #1 defense in all the land comes to the "Q". Senior defensive linebacker Jerry Hughes is one of the nation's most consistent defensive players with 23 tackles so far this year. TCU - 37 SAN DIEGO STATE - 13
MEMPHIS AT TENNESSEE - ESPNU - 7p - ERIC COLLINS/BROCK HAURD Two teams/One state and neither have anything in common. The Memphis Tigers are just 2-6 and losing games by an average of nearly 20 points. The Volunteers are beating SEC foes on average by 17 points while losing by less than four making them one score away from being 7-1. MEMPHIS - 14 TENNESSEE - 31 OREGON STATE AT CAL - 7p - FOX SPORTS NET - STEVE PHYSIOC/MIKE PAWLOWSKI/DREA AVENT After begnining the season 2-2, the Beavers of Oregon State have won 3 of 4 and are only 6 points from making it 4 out of 4 barely losing to USC in the Coliseum. While struggling Cal did make it out of Tempe with a 23-21 win over Arizona State. Two good (not great) mid-leve Pac Ten teams that should provide for great entertainment during the commercials.. OREGON STATE - 27 CAL - 34
VANDERBILT AT #1 FLORIDA - 7:15p - ESPN2 - MARK JONES/BOB DAVIE Bottom line...Florida loses this? Well....just keep to steppin', do not pass go, do not collect $200. FLORIDA - 41 VANDERBILT - 10
#15 HOUSTON AT TULSA - 7:30p - CBS COLLEGE SPORTS - TOM HART/AARON TAYLOR Tulsa has lost three straight, but one of those three was a 28-21 loss to Boise State. Now losing to SMU and UTEP, that's another story. Houston has the #1 offense in the nation, but a mind numbing 114th best defense. Don't be surprised if this one is too close for comfort. TULSA - 33 HOUSTON - 34 FLORIDA STATE AT CLEMSON - 7:45p - ESPN - BRAD NESSLER/TODD BLACKLEDGE/ERIN ANDREWS See above Georgia Tech reference. Florida State is just one score each from being a one loss team and have won two straight. Clemson started the season 2-3 and many left the Tigers for dead, but have since rattled off 3 straight and boast the nation's 12th best defense. Who's the real deal? FLORIDA STATE - 24 CLEMSON - 32 UCONN AT #5 CINCINNATI - 8p - ABC/ESPN - BRENT MUSBERGER/KIRK HERBSTREIT/LISA SALTERS Look at the Big East getting some primetime love AND ABC's A-GAME broadcast crew. Cincinnati Sophomore Quarterback Zach Collaros has filled in nicely for the injured Tony Pike completing 47 of 63 passes for 749 yards and 9 touchdowns. Granted it's been against the likes of Louisville and Syracuse, but impressive still. UConn should give them a tougher challenge, not much tougher but more of a challenge. How gas is left in the tank for the Huskies coming off two gut wrenching last minute loses? UCONN - 17 CINCINNATI - 34 OKLAHOMA AT NEBRASKA - 8p - ABC/ESPN - RON FRANKLIN/ED CUNNINGHAM What in the name of Barry Switzer and Tom Osborne is going on with these two programs trying to get back to respectability? OU comes in winning 3 of the last four while Nebrakska finally got back to it's winning ways last week at Baylor BUT does 20-10 (@ Baylor) after losing two at home really constitute a "good win"? OKLAHOMA - 24 NEBRASKA - 19 FRESNO STATE AT IDAHO - 10:30p - ESPNU - JUSTIN KUTCHER/J.C. PEARSON If you're staying up for this one, you my friend, are a MUCH bigger fan than I so I tip my hat. FRESNO STATE - 39 IDAHO - 32
That's it for this week. Start your gameday with the Dr. and I Saturday at 9a right here on 790wkrd!
SUNDAY MORNING HANGOVER - WEEK 8
Sunday 11-01-2009 6:43pm ET
This just in....teams (and players) are human. USC getting waxed by Oregon is further validation that nothing lasts forever. The Men of Troy's grip on the Pac Ten appears to be coming to an end, or at the least a brief hiatus. That said, this was a "down" year or "rebuilding" year for the Trojans, but that's to take NOTHING away from Oregon. Oregon coming in had the nation's 108th passing offense while USC had the nation's 58th best defense and Masoli STILL averaged just over 7 yards a pass. Clearly a changing of the guard in the PAC TEN.
Last week we told you that Texas' ability to drop the hammer at will against teams like Colorado was telling of a National Championship Team. Watching Iowa score at will against Indiana in the 4th quarter, it's hard to make the case for Texas and not Iowa. BUT (and there's always a BUT) coming into this game IU had the nation's 88th best defense. While I'm not a fan, nor am I a believer, they are 9-0. Me...not a hater, just not ready to believe they can beat the likes of Texas and Florida.
Did Notre Dame play yesterday? The rule that if Notre Dame is in the top 8 of the BCS they "automatically get in" is further validation that a playoff is needed. The sense of entitlement is nauseating to say the least.
It was nice to see Gene Chizik and the Auburn Tigers get back to winning. Ole Miss and South Carolina seem to have a lot in common...overrated.
Love or hate him, Lane Kiffin is here and you (SEC East) need to get used to it.
Is it just me or does every Tim Tebow post game speech just annoy the living daylights out of you?
"Hi, my name is Mike Stoops, perhaps you know my brother Bob? Unlike Bob, I could
ACTUALLY make a run at my conference this year." Arizona hosts Oregon on 11.21.09. While highly unlikely...not out of the question and fun to think about. Post Script: Wildcats 14th best offense. Oregon...45th. But Oregon wins with defense you say....yes you're right 20th best in the country. Arizona...24th.
Why does the evil four letter's "U" have a former Ohio State "kicker" as an analyst??? Really? A kicker? Seriously? Are they that hard up for talent? This is of course the same network that keeps cramming Lou Holtz down our throats. That explains a lot.
Sooooooo......Michigan, I guess the rest college football didn't get that memo that said the college football season ended on October 31st. Apparently the Wolverines have packed it in for this season.
Why is it the teams who honk the loudest that there are too many bowls are the first to celebrate the fact that their team is bowl eligible?
As we told you last week, they are the University of Texas and THEY ARE The best team in the nation. #1 scoring offense and #3 total defense throwing the hammer down early at Oklahoma State. It's a long season, but for this week the horns ARE THE BEST TEAM in all the land.
The beauty of Iowa coming from behind and Oregon rolling up USC...NO HEISMAN TALK! NICE!!
Would like to thank the Big 11 for yet another round of riveting college football yesterday. I was flippin between Columbia V. Yale on the Y.E.S. and the Big 11 games. Some of the similarities were striking.
Probably not the most defining moment in Duke sports history but with one more win the Duke Football team becomes bowl eligible and actually have a shot at winning the ACC's Coastal Division, granted it's a long shot, but they're still in the running.
Speaking of...Big tip of the hat to the Temple Owls who beat Navy yesterday to become bowl eligible themselves...woot!
QUOTABLE: "The computers don't have eyes" - Brian Jones (CBS College Sports)
Still 7 undefeated teams in college football. This is going to be a fun ride the rest of the way out.
After yesterday Tulane isn't scheduled to play LSU anytime soon. Perhaps it's just me,but should I feel bad that as a college football fan, this has no effect on me whatsoever? Seriously, who sits there and thinks "Damn, I can't wait to catch that Tulane/LSU game" It does nothing for either program except give LSU another home game every other year.
So ABC's Bob Griese was suspended yesterday for his "Taco" comments. Did anyone miss him? Didn't think so.
WANTED: We are an exciting University with incredible potential and rich tradition. We are currently seeking a head football coach. Must have demonstrated knowledge of "getting over". Send resume to athleticdirector@georgia.edu. No phone calls please.
Slow week in college football so let's get to the RATE-A-CONFERENCE shall we?
FOUR STARS
No one yet
THREE STARS
BIG XII - Texas and OU getting over are a plus, so is Nebraska getting over @ Baylor. Normally not a big deal but after losing two at home ANY win is a big deal for the Huskers.
THIS WEEK: OU @ Nebraska - Central Florida @ Texas
PAC TEN - Oregon breaking through is worthy of the third star, but we've only just started the 2nd half of the season. They are now the banner carriers which means they will have the pressure of maintaining each week.
THIS WEEK: Oregon @ Stanford
SEC - Florida getting back on track V. Georgia coupled w/Gene Chizik getting Auburn back to it's winning ways is always a plus and of course Tennessee making yet another statement makes the Southeastern Conference worthy of three stars.
THIS WEEK - LSU @ Alabama, that's pretty much it.
TWO STARS
ACC - Virginia Tech needed to get over on UNC in Blacksburg. That said FSU got over, as did Miami and Boston College. Georgia Tech got over on the SEC.
NEXT WEEK: Virginia Tech @ E. Carolina (Thurs) - Duke @ UNC - UVA @ Miami(FL) - FSU @ Clemson.
BIG EAST - West Virginia needed to get over S. Florida Friday. Cincy could have stood to hang more than 28 on the 'Cuse and Louisville only getting over by 8 on Arkansas State...not a great week.
NEXT WEEK: UConn @ Cincy - The 'Cuse @ Pitt - Louisville @ West Virginia.
BIG 11 - Here we go....well, at least it's not a one star. Iowa's comeback (again) saved this conference from itself. BUT...Michigan's choke job against Illinois, Sparty losing its 2nd of three and that barn burner between NW and Penn State were hardly worthy.
THIS WEEK: NW @ Iowa (Classy Kirk 1-4 v. NW) and Ohio State @ Penn State (1-3)
ONE STAR
No one that bad....this week.
Easy read this week boys and girls....check back Wednesday for this week's predictions and TV Sked.
NUMBER CRUNCHING
Saturday 10-31-2009 8:45am ET
There's been a lot of debate over just who is worthy at the mid point of the season. The Roundtable crunched some numbers and while we have a LONG way to go, here's what we found. (FCS SCHOOLS NOT INCLUDED)
We compared the following statistical categories: - Points for & against vs. teams played (i.e. margin of victory) - Strength of schedule (based upon teams played) - Average ranking of offense among teams played - Average ranking of defense among teams played - Win/Loss record of teams played
It's not an exact science but does give a pretty good indication (aside from the computers) as to what's going on.
IOWA HAWKEYES - Points for & against vs. teams played (i.e. margin of victory): 172-102 (+70) - Strength of schedule (based upon teams played): 25.29 - Average ranking of offense among teams played: 42.5 - Average ranking of defense among teams played: 42.4 - Win/Loss record of teams played: 33-19 (+14)
CINCINNATI BEARCATS - Points for & against vs. teams played (i.e. margin of victory): 181-76 (+105) - Strength of schedule (based upon teams played): 33.6 - Average ranking of offense among teams played: 61.4 - Average ranking of defense among teams played: 63.4 - Win/Loss record of teams played: 15-21 (-6)
FLORIDA GATORS - Points for & against vs. teams played (i.e. margin of victory): 185-68 (+117) - Strength of schedule (based upon teams played): 32 - Average ranking of offense among teams played: 58.5 - Average ranking of defense among teams played: 57.5 - Win/Loss record of teams played: 24-19 (+5)
TEXAS LONGHORNS - Points for & against vs. teams played (i.e. margin of victory): 293-95 (+198) - Strength of schedule (based upon teams played): 51.7 - Average ranking of offense among teams played: 61.2 - Average ranking of defense among teams played: 65.8 - Win/Loss record of teams played: 26-24 (+2)
USC TROJANS - Points for & against vs. teams played (i.e. margin of victory): 220-106 (+114) - Strength of schedule (based upon teams played): 27.5 - Average ranking of offense among teams played: 63.7 - Average ranking of defense among teams played: 86.28 - Win/Loss record of teams played: 25-25
TEXAS CHRISTIAN HORNED FROGS - Points for & against vs. teams played (i.e. margin of victory): 185-62 (+117) - Strength of schedule (based upon teams played): 38 - Average ranking of offense among teams played: 74.0 - Average ranking of defense among teams played: 46.8 - Win/Loss record of teams played: 23-22 (+1)
WEEK 9 COLLEGE FOOTBALL TV SKED AND PREDICTIONS
Wednesday 10-28-2009 3:07pm ET
***RANKINGS REFLECT BCS RANKINGS***
THURSDAY NORTH CAROLINA AT #13 VIRGINIA TECH - 7:30p - ESPN - CHRIS FOWLER/JESSIE PALMER/ERIN ANDREWS Second week for the Tar Heels on the primetime Thursday game and they didn't draw well this week as they hit the road for Blacksburg to do battle with the Hokies who wasted a chance to wrap up the ACC Coastal division losing at Georgia Tech. Despite the titanic meltdown against Florida State, the Tarheels still post the nation's 7th best defense. The problem...they're 114th best on offense. NORTH CAROLINA - 14
VIRGINIA TECH - 31
FRIDAY #21 WEST VIRGINIA AT SOUTH FLORIDA - 8p - ESPN - JOE TESSITORE/ROD GILMORE The South Florida Bulls have started the past two years with a combined 12-1 record only to finish the season(s) a combined 5-8. Could be 5-9 after West Virginia and the nation's 3rd best rusher Noel Devine come calling on Halloween eve. It doesn't help that the Bulls, even with George Selvie are fielding the nations' 59th best rushing defense. Should start to see some separation in the Big East this week. WEST VIRGINIA - 26
SOUTH FLORIDA - 24 SATURDAY #8 CINCINNATI AT SYRACUSE - 12p - ESPNU - CLAY MATVICK/DAVID DIAZ-INFANTE The Bearcat's win against Louisville apparently didn't impress the BCS computers as Cincy slipped in the rankings. With games still remaining against West Virginia and Pitt and as long as they (WV & PITT) keep winning, the nation's 2nd best scoring offense could really make an impact on the national scene come Decemeber. CINCINNATI - 31 SYRACUSE - 17 INDIANA AT #4 IOWA - 12p - ESPN - MARK JONES/BOB DAVIE Yet another barn-burner out of the Big Ten. I'm just not ready to get on the love train with Iowa yet. This team is just one score from being 4-4...those games include Northern Iowa and Arkansas State...both @ Iowa. I'm not sayin...I'm just sayin. INDIANA - 14 IOWA - 33
NEW MEXICO STATE AT #17 OHIO STATE - 12p - BIG TEN NETWORK - MATT ROSEN/GLEN MASON The New Mexico State Aggies bring their 120th best offense to C-Bus on Saturday. This should give Terrelle Pyror and the Ohio State offense plenty of field time and a chance for both to pad their stats and get the critics off their back...for a week..until the Buckeyes travel to Penn State the following week. NEW MEXICO STATE - 10 OHIO STATE - 41 PURDUE AT WISCONSIN - 12p - ESPN2 - PAM WARD/RAY BENTLEY Danny Hope and his Boilermakers nearly pulled off the upset @ Oregon before ultimately upsetting Ohio State two weeks ago. Beating Wisconsin is hardly an upset but there is reason for "Hope" in West Lafayette. Purdue sophomore running back Ralph Bolden is one of the top 3 rushers in the Big 11. PURDUE - 21 WISCONSIN - 26
RUTGERS AT UCONN - 12p - BIG EAST NETWORK - MIKE GLEASON/JOHN CONGEMI/QUINT KESSENICH Against West Virginia last week UConn played a nearly textbook fundamental football game, but came up just short as they continue to battle the emotional roller coaster following Jasper Howard's untimely death nearly two weeks ago. Very emotional home game this week. RUTGERS - 21 UCONN - 27
#25 OLE MISS AT AUBURN - 12p - SEC NETWORK - DAVE NEAL/ANDRE WARE/CARA CAPUANO Hard to believe after starting the season 5-0 the Auburn Tigers have lost three straight. Auburn Head Coach Gene Chizik desperately needs a win to save his sliding reputation. OLE MISS - 27 AUBURN - 34
NEBRASKA AT BAYLOR - 12:30p - VERSUS - RON THULIN/KELLY STOUFFER/LEWIS JOHNSON Speaking of sliding reputations...since blowing out Missouri a couple of weeks ago the Huskers have dropped two straight at home, to include last week against Iowa State for the first time since 1977. Looks like getting out of Lincoln is just what the Dr. ordered. NEBRASKA - 28 BAYLOR - 17
MISSOURI AT COLORADO - 12:30p - FOX SPORTS NET - BILL LAND/GARY REASONS/EMILY JONES After starting the season 1-4 the Colorado Buffaloes knocked off then ranked Kansas and some thought maybe this was the Colorado we were accustomed to until they met up with Kansas State last weekend and couldn't score a touchdown. This week Missouri comes to town and after starting 4-0 the Tigers have dropped three straight getting outscored 101-36. Not real sure I'll be tivo'ing this one. MISSOURI - 24
COLORADO - 21
YALE AT COLUMBIA - 12:30p - YES That's right, this is on THE Y.E.S. Network...and you thought the Yankees were always the priority. Columbia lost to Dartmouth last week and Yale fell to Penn 0-9. Columbia is on a three game losing streak since beating Princeton back on October 3rd. No where near their well publicized 44 game losing streak that went from 1983 to 1988. Yale has won it's last two out of three and does boast the nation's #1 FCS scoring defense. A lil Ivy League football is always good for the college football soul. Check it out in the commercials. YALE - 28 COLUMBIA - 14
ARKANSAS STATE AT LOUISVILLE - 3:30p - ESPN (GAMEPLAN) - DREW DEENER/DOUG JAMES What was once thought to be an automatic win for the Louisville Cardinals is now anyone's game. The Red Wolves record may read 2-4 but they are just one score from being 5-1. To include nearly knocking off now #4 Iowa (in Iowa). It may be the Sun Belt Conference but they are tops when it comes to rushing defense, total defense and scoring defense. They've played at Iowa and at Nebraska. Don't quite think they'll be coming into this one to worried about the intimidation factor. ARKANSAS STATE - 22 LOUISVILLE - 24
CAL @ ARIZONA STATE - 3:30p - ABC (GAMEPLAN) - TERRY GANNON/DAVID NORRIE After losing to Oregon and USC by a combined score of 72-3 many wrote off the Cal Bears yet here they are the last week in October 5-2 and lead the Pac Ten in rushing offense and scoring offense. While 2nd in turnover margin and sacks. For Arizona State (4-3) a fluke win over Washington on a busted play was followed up by a 33-14 loss to Standford. CAL - 31 ARIZONA STATE - 24
CENTRAL MICHIGAN AT BOSTON COLLEGE - 3:30 p.m. - ESPNU - TODD HARRIS/CHARLES ARBUCKLE After losing the season opener by just a touchdown to Arizona all the Chips have been able to do is rattle off 7 straight to include a win @ Michigan State who nearly knocked off the #4 Iowa Hawkeyes last week. They sit just two spots outside the AP top 25 and QB Dan Lefevour rates the MAC's most efficient passer and one of the nation's 15 best. CENTRAL MICHIGAN - 21 BOSTON COLLEGE - 27 #1 FLORIDA V. GEORGIA - 3:30 p.m. - CBS - VERNE LUNDQUIST/GARY DANIELSON/TRACEY WOLFSON Back in week five of the season the Georgia Bulldogs were 4-1 heading into a showdown with the LSU Tigers. Even then they were a woeful 74th on offense and 67th on defense. It's no surprise that they've only been able to go 1-2 since and find themselves on the short end of what is normally one of college football's greatest games. Can the Gators silence the critics who say they aren't what they were last year or are they in-fact on their way down from the reign they've held on college football? FLORIDA - 31
GEORGIA - 14
KANSAS AT TEXAS TECH - 3:30 p.m. - ABC (GAMEPLAN) - RON FRANKLIN/ED CUNNINGHAM Kansas falls from grace after dropping two straight, but still have a top 10 offense behind QB Todd Reesing. So do the Red Raiders EVEN after dropping last week's game to Texas A&M 52-30 who in fact, lost their previous three by a combined score of 145-64. KANSAS - 30 TEXAS TECH - 37
#19 MIAMI(FL) AT WAKE FOREST - 3:30 P.M. - ABC (GAMEPLAN) - BOB WISCHUSEN/BRIAN GRIESE Just how fragile is a season? Last week at this time the Miami Hurricanes were a top ten team, but one Clemson OT touchdown pass later they are at the bottom looking up at the likes of Houston, Utah and Pitt. WOW! All signs point to the team formerly known as "swagger" to get over on the "Wake", but that's what she said (about Clemson). MIAMI(FL) - 31 WAKE FOREST - 21
MICHIGAN AT ILLINOIS - 3:30P - ESPN2 - MIKE PATRICK/CRAIG JAMES Michigan will get bowl eligible this year, but against who? It will be interesting to see how this team deals with losing now three straight (the Penn State whooping cancels out the Delaware State win). THE University of Illinois told Ron Zook he would be back next year as head coach, will that put the Illini at ease? MICHIGAN - 27 ILLINOIS - 21 TEMPLE AT NAVY - 3:30p - CBS COLLEGE SPORTS - DAVE RYAN/RANDY CROSS
Temple...it isn't just for John Chaney anymore. Don't look now, but after starting the season with back to back loses V Penn State and Villanova, the Owls have ripped off 5 straight and have the MAC's #1 defense. Suddenly Temple Football is relevant...who knew? TEMPLE - 17 NAVY - 26
UNLV AT #6 TCU - 4p - VERSUS - TIM NEVERETT/GLENN PARKER/LINDSAY SOTO The Runnin' Rebels are just 1-4 in their last 5. That "one" was a win last week over winless New Mexico. THE ONLY way TCU drops this one is the emotional let down after BYU. TCU Senior Defensive Lineman Jerry Hughes...THE nation's 4th best defensive back...dude is a beast! UNLV - 14 TCU - 42 #12 PENN STATE @ NORTHWESTERN - 4:30p - ESPN - CARTER BLACKBURN/CHRIS SPEILMAN Late Halloween start on the evil four letter. Last week against Indiana the Wildcats posted their biggest comeback in school history down 28-3 in mid-way through the 2nd quarter to Indiana they battled back to get over 29-28. This week they get a tune up against Penn State before they head to Iowa (a team they're 4-1 vs. the last 5). PENN STATE - 31 NORTHWESTERN - 16
EASTERN MICHIGAN AT ARKANSAS - 7:00p - ESPNU - ERIC COLLINS/BROCK HAURD After beating previously undefeated Auburn and nearly upsetting Florida in the Swamp, the honeymoon seemed to end last week when Bobby Petrino's Razorbacks fell to Ole Miss 30-17. They should have no problem getting over this week, but don't expect any high fives in Fayettenam for getting over on Eastern Michigan. E. MICHIGAN - 10 ARKANSAS - 49
KANSAS STATE AT OKLAHOMA - 7:00p - FOX SPORTS NET - JOEL MEYERS/DAVE LAPUM/JIM KNOX When Bill Snyder's Kansas State Wildcats started the season 1-2 many wondered if bringing back the once successful head coach was such a good idea. Since then he's gone 4-1 to include a 62-14 thumping of Texas A&M. The problem is they only boast the nation's 104th best offense. The Sooners continue to limp through 2009...could be entertaining if you're a die hard Big XII fan or.....maybe not. KANSAS STATE - 10 OKLAHOMA - 38
NEW MEXICO AT SAN DIEGO STATE - 7:30p - CBS COLLEGE SPORTS - TOM HART/AARON TAYLOR/AKBAR GBAJA-BIAMILA San Diego State Sophomore Punter Brian Stahovich #4 nationally in punting. That's all there is to talk about when it comes to this one...OUCH. NEW MEXICO - 17 SAN DIEGO STATE - 33 NOTRE DAME V. WASHINGTON STATE (SAN ANTONIO) - 7:30p - NBC - TOM HAMMOND/PAT HAYDEN/ALEX FLANNAGAN Of course who didn't remember the oh so famous San Antonio chapters of the Notre Dame and Washington State fan clubs....San Antonio? Really? Seriously? (sarcasim folks) We've discussed ad nauseum just how close Notre Dame is to being a 4-4 football team. Washington State? Not only are they just 1-6, they rank 103rd or lower in 12 of the 17 statistical categories college football teams are currently ranked in. Watch at your own risk..me, I'd rather watch re-runs of iCarly w/my daughter than this one. NOTRE DAME - 44 WASHINGTON STATE - 16
#22 SOUTH CAROLINA AT TENNESSEE - 7:45p - ESPN - BRAD NESSLER/TODD BLACKLEDGE/ERIN ANDREWS One more reprimand and Tennessee Head Coach Lane Kiffin could be suspended after making comments about the officials following the Volunteers near upset of then #1 Alabama. The first year coach who according to some honks had "no talent" to be competitive is just 6 combined points from being 6-1 and still have one of the nation's 10 best defenses. Former mouth of the south Steve Spurrier and his Gamecocks bring the nation's 14th best defense to Neyland Stadium. Would a win over Spurrier signify the "passing of the mouth torch" to Kiffin? SOUTH CAROLINA - 17 TENNESSEE - 24
MICHIGAN STATE AT MINNESOTA - 8p - BIG TEN NETWORK - WAYNE LARRIVEE/CHRIS MARTIN/REBECCA HAARLOW *YAWN*....I'm sorry, were you saying something? Put these two on the ice and you bet I'll be watching, otherwise...*click* MICHIGAN STATE - 26 MINNESOTA - 21
#3 TEXAS AT #14 OKLAHOMA STATE - 8p - ABC (OR ESPN2) - SEAN MCDONOUGH/MATT MILLEN/HOLLY ROWE Texas clearly is right where they want to be. #3 in the BCS, nation's #1 scoring offense, #2 defense. Win out and they are in the national championship game. They do have to get the running game going. That'll be a tall order vs. Oklahoma State whose allowing just under 100 yards per game. If the Horns make it through this they should have relatively smooth sailing the rest of the way with Central Florida, @Baylor, Kansas (exception to the rule), and @Texas A&M before the Big XII Championship game. I say again, they need to get through this one first. TEXAS - 31 OKLAHOMA STATE - 24 #5 USC AT #11 OREGON - 8p - ABC - BRENT MUSBERGER/KIRK HERBSTRIET/LISA SALTERS What we've been waiting for all season. Will the real PAC TEN Champion please stand up. Oregon has one signature win (42-3) over Cal. They nearly lost to Purdue at home and they do have the nation's 108th best passing offense and 66th best offense overall. Defensively they are a respectable 19th, but again boast only one respectable win. On the flip side USC did win @ Ohio State and Notre Dame (I know, not realistically much to hang your hat on there) but more than Oregon. Rushing defense is 5th best nationally. Bottom line, more talent for Pete Carroll than Chip Kelly. Should be a good one though, perhaps the best game of the day. USC - 24 OREGON - 21
